College Counseling

SEGL provides college counseling for all students as they begin the college admissions process. Both group sessions and one-on-one counseling are available each semester. College selection, admissions requirements, testing program choices, and essay writing skills are significant elements of this work. Our faculty expertise includes extensive college counseling experience at highly competitive preparatory schools, service on college admissions committees, and professional training. These strengths enable students to gain the perspective and confidence they need as they begin to make plans for life after high school.

COLLEGE ACCEPTANCES

SEGL strives to help students find the best undergraduate “fit” for their academic interests, extracurricular passions, and individual personalities. We are particularly proud of the 15-20% of our students who will be the first in their families to attend college.

The most frequently-attended undergraduate institutions for SEGL graduates are: Brown, Duke, George Washington, Georgetown, Harvard, NYU, Tufts, Wesleyan, and Yale.

DC AREA COLLEGE VISITS

Students have the opportunity to visit colleges and universities in the Washington, DC area while at SEGL. Our school’s work with Georgetown University, George Washington University, and American University acts as a starting point for our college visits. We make use of local university libraries, visit professors, and attend admissions sessions in order to expose students to different aspects of the college experience.

STANDARDIZED TESTING

SEGL encourages students to schedule standardized testing outside of their semester. Students enrolled in our spring semester should register to take the SAT and/or ACT before they arrive or after they return home in June. Our Academic Dean helps arrange for students to take the PSAT in the fall semester (at a local school) and Advanced Placement tests in the spring (at SEGL), using their home school’s CEEB code.  Questions regarding standardized tests should be directed to SEGL Academic Dean Christian Starling at christian.starling@schoolforethics.org. Students unable to take SAT or ACT exams outside of their SEGL semester may register to take them at Gonzaga College High School while in Washington.

EDUCATION CONSULTANT

SEGL works with Dr. Pamela Ellis to provide outstanding college counseling to our students each semester.  Dr. Ellis (an SEGL graduate parent) shares trends, timeline recommendations, college process worksheets, and general advice on a pro bono basis.
